{"id":1954,"date":"2020-05-05T10:17:18","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T10:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wealthatwork.co.uk\/jpm\/?p=1954"},"modified":"2020-11-18T10:47:42","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T10:47:42","slug":"market-update-5th-may-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.wealthatwork.co.uk\/jpm\/2020\/05\/05\/market-update-5th-may-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Market Update \u2013 5th May 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_raw_code wpb_content_element wpb_raw_html\">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TFm_Rq9nyh0?rel=0&amp;wmode=transparent\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid\">\n<div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\">\n<div class=\"vc_column-inner \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>Equity markets opened lower yesterday after Donald Trump reignited tensions with China.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, the prospect of mixing the negative theme from 2018\/19 (the US\/China trade war), with that of this year (the coronavirus outbreak), is not a particularly attractive one.\u00a0 However, while it was headline news (like all negatives), as we said yesterday, at present this appears to simply be bombastic rhetoric from Donald Trump ahead of the Presidential elections in November.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, while equity markets opened lower, they spent the day slowly grinding higher \u2013 and while the FTSE-100 ended the day down just over 9 points, on Wall Street both the Dow Jones and the S&amp;P 500 finished the day in positive territory (up 0.11% and 0.42% respectively).<\/p>\n<p>This morning equity markets have opened sharply higher (as we write the FTSE-100 is up 75 points or 1.3%) after California announced the fewest deaths from the coronavirus outbreak in three weeks, which prompted the Californian Governor, Gavin Newsom, to announce a loosening of the lockdown restrictions and allowing some businesses to reopen later this week.<\/p>\n<p>This is very positive news as not only does California have the largest economy in the US, its economy is actually bigger than that of the UK \u2013 and provides us with reassurance that we will see a V-shaped economic recovery.<\/p>\n<p>However, that doesn\u2019t mean that the path for financial markets will be smooth \u2013 as we have previously warned, we fully expect market volatility will remain elevated in the short-term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investment Management Team<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n  <\/div> ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Equity markets opened lower yesterday after Donald Trump reignited tensions with China.
