6th May 2021."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\">[vc_row][vc_column][vc_raw_html]JTNDaWZyYW1lJTIwd2lkdGglM0QlMjI1NjAlMjIlMjBoZWlnaHQlM0QlMjIzMTUlMjIlMjBzcmMlM0QlMjJodHRwcyUzQSUyRiUyRnd3dy55b3V0dWJlLmNvbSUyRmVtYmVkJTJGSVdNZ09PeTIyMVUlM0ZyZWwlM0QwJTIyJTIwdGl0bGUlM0QlMjJZb3VUdWJlJTIwdmlkZW8lMjBwbGF5ZXIlMjIlMjBmcmFtZWJvcmRlciUzRCUyMjAlMjIlMjBhbGxvdyUzRCUyMmFjY2VsZXJvbWV0ZXIlM0IlMjBhdXRvcGxheSUzQiUyMGNsaXBib2FyZC13cml0ZSUzQiUyMGVuY3J5cHRlZC1tZWRpYSUzQiUyMGd5cm9zY29wZSUzQiUyMHBpY3R1cmUtaW4tcGljdHVyZSUyMiUyMGFsbG93ZnVsbHNjcmVlbiUzRSUzQyUyRmlmcmFtZSUzRQ==[\/vc_raw_html][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The inflation theme has remained front and centre for global equity markets so far this week thanks to contradictory comments from Janet Yellen, the US Treasury Secretary and former Fed Chair.<\/p>\n<p>Having said over the weekend that she doesn\u2019t expect Joe Biden\u2019s latest $4tr fiscal plan (which includes spending on infrastructure, childcare and education) will cause any inflation problems because demand will be spread out over a long period of time, just two days later (on Tuesday 4 May 2021), she stated that US interest rates may need to rise to prevent the US economy from overheating.<\/p>\n<p>Although she quickly backtracked by explaining that she wasn\u2019t \u201cpredicting or recommending\u201d an increase in US interest rates and stressed that the Fed\u2019s (the US central bank) policies were independent of the US government, unfortunately the damage had been done:\u00a0 global equity markets had been on a roller-coaster ride.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s no surprise equity markets initially sold-off as Janet Yellen\u2019s comments came hot on the heels of last week\u2019s suggestion by Robert Kaplan, the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, that the Fed should start to tighten monetary policy, thankfully John Williams, the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, this week said exactly what we have been forecasting:\u00a0 while inflation will rise sharply in the coming months, he expects inflation to quickly come back down to the Fed\u2019s 2% target and as such, the Fed doesn\u2019t need to change its current loose monetary stance.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation is not just a key theme in the US, but globally \u2013 and hopefully later today (Thursday 6 May 2021) we will hear if policymakers at the BoE also believe the UK\u2019s inflationary pressures are transitory.<\/p>\n<p>However, this week\u2019s equity market volatility highlights the market\u2019s current obsession with whether or not persistently high inflation is coming &#8211;
